203 vs 300 dpi: choose from the smallest thing you print.

For ordinary 4×6 shipping labels, 203 dpi is often enough. The case for 300 dpi begins when the same printer must also produce small product labels, dense text, or tighter barcode modules.

What DPI does not fix

More dots cannot rescue a bad label setup.

Scanner performance also depends on symbol size, quiet zones, contrast, media, darkness, speed, calibration, and printhead condition. GS1 treats barcode quality as something to verify after printing—not something guaranteed by a DPI number.

A Zebra guide describes 203 dpi as adequate for many normal applications, while higher resolution becomes useful when limited label space or detailed text and graphics matter.
